How to Measure GEO Results: KPIs, Tools, and What to Track Every Month

GEO has no direct equivalent of Google Search Console. So how do you measure whether AI optimization is working? An overview of measurable KPIs, tools, and a practical monthly reporting framework for companies and agencies.

"How do I know it's working?" It's the most common question clients ask after GEO work begins. And it's a legitimate one — unlike classic SEO, where you have rankings and organic traffic, GEO has no single dashboard tool.

But GEO results are measurable. They're just measured differently.

Why GEO measurement is different from SEO

SEO has clear causality: you optimize a page → you get a higher ranking → you get more clicks. The whole chain is visible in Search Console.

The GEO chain looks like this: you optimize content → an AI model starts citing you → the user gets an answer without needing to click → your brand gets built → some users come to your website or contact you directly.

Two key implications:

  1. Citations ≠ clicks: AI can cite you a hundred times a day without generating detectable traffic
  2. The effect is delayed: LLM models update their knowledge graph with a certain lag — the results of GEO work fully materialize in 60–120 days (based on an analysis of 12 NocarStudio clients, 2025–2026)

Tier 1: Direct GEO metrics

These are metrics directly tied to AI citability.

Citability score — manual testing

The basic methodology: once a month, enter 20 key queries relevant to your business into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Record:

  • Is your company mentioned? (Yes/No)
  • At which position in the answer? (1st, 2nd, 3rd+)
  • Is the information correct?
  • Is your URL cited?

The result: citability score = (number of mentions / total number of queries) × 100.

Track this number monthly and compare. Across NocarStudio clients, we see that after the first 90 days of active GEO work, the citability score typically grows from an initial 10–20% to 30–45%. It depends on the website's starting state and how competitive the segment is.

Citation frequency in AI Overviews

For Google AI Overviews, run the same test directly in Google Search. Record how many queries produce an AI Overview that cites you. Always test on the same day of the month, from the same location, and in an incognito window.

Accuracy of the AI's company description

Test how accurately AI models describe your company when asked "[company name], what is it?". Score:

  • Correct description of activities (0–3 points)
  • Correct specialization (0–2 points)
  • Correct contact or geographic info (0–2 points)
  • No hallucination (0–3 points)

Maximum 10 points. Record a baseline before GEO work begins. Improvement in this score is one of the most accurate proxy indicators of entity recognition — that is, whether AI "knows who you are".

Tier 2: Indirect GEO metrics in analytics

AI-referred traffic

In Google Analytics 4, create a segment or report for these referral sources:

  • perplexity.ai
  • chatgpt.com
  • claude.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • you.com
  • phind.com

Track trends monthly. Note: AI-referred traffic is only part of the GEO effect — a large share of users arrive via direct navigation (they remember the brand from an AI answer) or search for you via classic Google branded search.

Direct traffic trend

A strong but less direct signal: how is direct traffic (typing your URL directly) and branded search (searching for your company name on Google) growing? Both are proxy metrics for brand awareness — and brand awareness is one of the main effects of AI citations. In practice, we see that when a brand is cited in AI answers, branded search volume grows earlier than AI-referred traffic, because users remember the company and look it up on classic Google.

Branded search volume

In Google Search Console, track impressions and clicks for queries containing your company name. If brand awareness grows as a result of AI citations, you'll see an increase in branded search volume within 60–90 days of starting GEO work.

Tier 3: Qualitative signals

Client feedback

Regularly ask new clients or leads: "How did you hear about us?" or "Did you try asking ChatGPT or Perplexity about us?" This is an anecdotal but valuable signal — and a surprisingly strong one. One of our clients, a consulting firm in HR tech, found in 2026 that 3 out of 7 new leads in a quarter explicitly named an AI search engine as their first point of contact.

Media and PR citations

GEO work includes building authority and consistent communication. A side effect is that companies with a good GEO strategy also get cited in media coverage. Track your brand mentions via Google Alerts or Mention.com.

A practical monthly GEO reporting framework

Here is the structure we use for monthly reporting to NocarStudio clients:

Day 1 of each month:

  1. Run the 20-query manual test (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) — 60 min
  2. Export AI-referred traffic from GA4 for the past month — 10 min
  3. Check the branded search trend in Search Console — 10 min

Day 2–3: 4. Calculate the citability score and compare with the previous month 5. Check the accuracy of the AI's company description (any hallucination) 6. Record qualitative signals (a client mentioning AI, PR citations)

Report output:

Metric Current month Previous month Trend
Citability score (%)
AI-referred traffic
Branded search (impressions)
AI company description (/10)
New AI-sourced leads

Tools for GEO monitoring

Specialized GEO tools are only just emerging, but here are the currently available options:

Tool What it tracks Price
BrightEdge AI Overviews citations, ranking data Enterprise
Semrush AI Features AI Overview visibility From $120/month
Ahrefs AI Overviews AI Overview tracking in SERPs From $129/month
Manual testing Citability score via AI chatbots Free
Google Search Console Branded search, CTR anomalies Free
Google Analytics 4 AI-referred traffic Free
Google Alerts / Mention Brand mentions Free / from $29/month

For most Czech companies and agencies, the combination of manual testing + GA4 + Search Console is sufficient for meaningful reporting — without having to pay for enterprise tools.

How to interpret the results

GEO is an investment with a delayed effect. These benchmarks come from our work with clients across segments:

Month 1–2: Baseline measurement, technical changes (robots.txt, schema, llms.txt). The citability score doesn't move yet — this phase builds the foundation. More on the technical foundation in the GEO audit checklist.

Month 3–4: First movement in the citability score — typically +8–18 percentage points. AI-referred traffic starts becoming measurable. Branded search may show a slight increase.

Month 5–6: Consistent citability for key queries. Branded search and direct traffic grow measurably. The first qualitative signals start appearing (leads from AI sources).

Month 6+: The full effect of GEO work. Citability score stabilized at the target level. A growing share of AI-sourced leads.

If you see no movement in the citability score after 90 days, that's a signal to review the strategy — typically it's unindexed content (robots.txt blocking) or a fundamental problem with E-E-A-T signals. See 5 reasons why ChatGPT doesn't know you.

What GEO measurement won't reveal

It's important to be transparent about the limits:

Direct citation attribution: We have no direct access to the logs of AI models. The citability score is an estimate, not an exact count.

ChatGPT offline mode: ChatGPT without Browsing doesn't update its knowledge base in real time. Testing can give different results depending on the model version and training date.

Causality vs. correlation: If branded search and AI-referred traffic grow at the same time as your GEO work, GEO is the probable cause — but it could also be something else (a PR campaign, seasonality). Watch the context.

Transparent reporting is the foundation of a trustworthy GEO relationship. Communicate the limitations of the metrics to clients as openly as the results.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure GEO when there's no equivalent of Search Console? With a combination of direct metrics (manual query testing across AI platforms, citability score, accuracy of the company description) and indirect metrics in analytics (AI-referred traffic, direct traffic trend, branded search).

What is a citability score? The share of tested queries for which AI mentions or cites your brand. The same set of queries (e.g. 20) is tested regularly across platforms — after 90 days of active GEO work it typically grows from 10–20% to 30–45%.

How do you set up AI traffic measurement in GA4? Create a segment for the referral sources chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. Alongside volume, watch the conversion rate above all — AI traffic tends to be smaller, but significantly higher quality.

How long until you see measurable results? The first shifts in AI answers within 4–8 weeks of implementation, a credible trend in the citability score after 90 days. Shorter measurement windows tell you more about noise than about effect.
